Kicking off the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly: A New Era of Leadership and Collaboration

            In a momentous occasion, the United Nations General Assembly has elected H.E. Mr. Philémon Yang of Cameroon as its President for the 79th session. This significant event marks a new chapter in the UN's journey towards promoting peace, sustainable development, and human dignity worldwide. As President-elect Yang takes the reins, he brings with him a wealth of experience and a vision for a more united and diverse world.

A Career Marked by Dedication and Leadership

President-elect Yang's remarkable career in public life is a testament to his depth of experience and breadth of vision. As Prime Minister of Cameroon, Chairperson of the African Union's Panel of Eminent Africans, and a seasoned diplomat at the United Nations, he has consistently demonstrated unwavering dedication to the principles of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity.

A Call for Renewed Multilateralism

        In his inaugural address, President-elect Yang emphasized the need for renewed multilateralism in the face of complex global challenges. He urged nations to work together, setting aside their differences, to address pressing issues such as conflicts, climate disruptions, and sustainable development. His leadership will focus on promoting unity and diversity, advancing peace, sustainable development, and human dignity everywhere and for all.

A Challenging Moment for Humanity

          United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres congratulated President-elect Yang, noting that he arrives at a challenging moment for humanity. With raging conflicts, deepening climate catastrophe, rife poverty and inequality, and growing mistrust and division, the international community faces numerous hurdles. The Secretary-General expressed confidence in President-elect Yang's ability to unite Member States around collaborative solutions that can deliver justice to Africa and the developing world.

African Group's Confidence in President-elect Yang

               The representative of Cameroon, speaking on behalf of the African Group, expressed confidence in President-elect Yang's leadership. They praised his academic and professional training, diplomatic and political wisdom, and his commitment to improving the destiny of countries in conflict or special situations, particularly in Africa.

Elections and Appointments Galore

         The General Assembly also elected the Bureaus of the six Main Committees, including the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security), the Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization), the Second Committee (Economic and Financial), the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural), the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary), and the Sixth Committee (Legal). Additionally, five non-permanent members were elected to the Security Council for two-year terms, representing Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and Western European and other States.

A New Era of Collaboration

         As President-elect Yang assumes office, he inherits a world grappling with numerous challenges. However, with his leadership and vision, the UN General Assembly is poised to make significant strides in promoting unity, diversity, peace, sustainable development, and human dignity. As nations come together to address common goals, the international community can look forward to a new era of collaboration and cooperation
