Introduction

In the bustling diplomatic world of Washington, D.C., where formal meetings and state dinners are the norm, the Finnish Embassy has introduced an unconventional approach to networking: the sauna. This unique practice, known as "sauna diplomacy," has garnered significant attention and become a sought-after experience for influential figures in the U.S. capital.

The Finnish Tradition of Sauna

Sauna is deeply ingrained in Finnish culture, with an estimated three million saunas for a population of 5.5 million. It is a ritualistic experience, often performed multiple times a week, involving alternating between intense heat and cold water. This practice, traditionally done in the nude, is not only a physical cleansing but also a social occasion.

“When you are half-naked or even sometimes completely naked, it allows for deeper discussion,” said Mikko Hautala, the ambassador of Finland to the United States. “You talk in a way that doesn’t happen when you are sitting around a table with a tie on or at some formal thing.

The Diplomatic Sauna Society

Sixteen years ago, the Finnish Embassy in Washington established the Diplomatic Sauna Society, inviting influential individuals from various fields to experience the sauna together. This initiative has gained popularity due to Finland's growing international influence and the desire of busy professionals to incorporate wellness into their lives.

“We have a golden rule that whatever happens in the sauna stays in the sauna,” Ambassador Hautala said. “We try to make sure there is full trust and confidence.”

A Unique Networking Experience

The Diplomatic Sauna Society offers a distinctive networking opportunity, departing from the traditional formality of diplomatic gatherings. Participants, both male and female, gather at the embassy, undress (though bathing suits are optional), and engage in the sauna ritual. Following the sauna session, attendees enjoy drinks, traditional Finnish snacks, and engaging conversation in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Mr. Gramer, the journalist, said the sauna gatherings were a welcome change from other events in the nation’s capital. “Embassies in D.C. always have different events, and oftentimes they are buttoned-up and pretty boring,” he said. “The sauna is different,” he said. “It’s a lot warmer. It’s a lot more welcoming.”

The Benefits of Sauna Diplomacy

Several factors contribute to the success of sauna diplomacy. First, the shared experience of the sauna fosters a sense of camaraderie and trust among participants. The intimate setting, often behind closed doors, encourages open and honest discussions. Second, the sauna ritual itself promotes relaxation and well-being, creating a conducive environment for meaningful conversations.

Third, sauna diplomacy offers a unique opportunity for networking. Participants can connect with influential individuals from various sectors, including politics, diplomacy, journalism, and academia. These connections can be valuable for building relationships, exchanging ideas, and advancing professional goals.

The Growing Popularity of Sauna Diplomacy

The Diplomatic Sauna Society has become highly sought after, with numerous requests for invitations received each week. The Finnish Embassy's reputation for innovation and its growing influence in international affairs have contributed to its popularity. Additionally, the increasing interest in wellness and mindfulness has made sauna diplomacy an attractive proposition for busy professionals.

Max Bergmann, director of the Europe, Russia and Eurasia program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said it was also in Finland’s interest to cultivate close relationships in the United States. “People who attend a sauna get this memorable experience, and they will remember the Finns who hosted them, and the next time the Finns ask for a meeting, they will get one.”

Conclusion

Sauna diplomacy offers a refreshing alternative to traditional diplomatic gatherings. By combining the Finnish tradition of sauna with the art of networking, the Finnish Embassy has created a unique and memorable experience. As Finland's international profile continues to rise, sauna diplomacy is likely to remain a popular and effective tool for fostering relationships and promoting understanding.

Mr. Gramer agreed the setup was a win-win: “I never thought I would say this, but networking in the nude is just better.”
